SWW Members take on the Stephen Roche Atlantic Challenge

The Stephen Roche Atlantic Challenge.

Raising funds for the visually impaired and blind people of Co. Clare was the reason behind this cycle and the reason former Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and World Championship winner Stephen Roche was in Lahinch last Sunday morning. He wasn’t alone mind you as seven Southside Wheely Wheelers had made the trip to clare also, to cycle the challenging 80 km course and enjoy the beautiful scenery county Clare has to offer. Joining the Irish cycling legend were Mike Gammell, Brendan Daly, Willie McCarthy, Ger Finn, Simon Kelly, Paul Finn and Pat O’Donnell. Starting in Lahinch the course took the cyclists to the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Black Head, Ballyvaughan, Corkscrew Hill, Lisdoonvarna, Ennistymon and back to Lahinch. Well done lads.

Welcome back Owen!!

No Rest for the Wicked!!

As it’s a policy of the club to take a break on bank holiday weekends there was no official club spin on Sunday 18 March. As it was Mothers Day and the day after St. Patricks day most sensible club members were at home in bed at 7.00am. No so for the following head bangers, Pat “Blackie” O’Donnell, Daithi Creedon, Willie McCarthy, Donal “Dodo” Kelly, Mike “I’m flying but I won’t admit it” Gammell, Stephen Finn, Brendan Houlihan and Shane O’Brien. Blackie had thrown out a facebook invitation on Saturday evening to “do the Hub in reverse”, a kind of a Post Paddy’s day Punishment. The deal was to start early so anyone with plans for the day could get home at a sensible hour. It seemed like a good idea for the aforementioned Wheely Wheelers and we rolled towards Bruff as the cock was crowing!! Before long the sun was shining and you couldn’t have asked for a nicer morning for cycling. We spun through Bruff, Holycross, Knockainey, Hospital, Knocklong, Elton, Tipperary, over Christ the King, Lisvernane, Galbally, Ballylanders, Ballintubber, Kilfinane where a few turned off for Kilmallock due to time constraints, Ballyorgan, over to the garden centre, over Glennanar and home to Kilmallock. A great spin, good chat and slagging and really enjoyed by all. Thanks to group leader on the day Blackie for the idea and planning the route, nice one!!

Well last Wednesday’s night cycle was really well attended by club members looking forward to a mid-week blast. We seem to be blessed with the weather lately and this was no exception. The following SWW’s left the car park at 6.30, Brendan Daly, Robert Shanahan, Paul Gammell, Mike Gammell, Sean Burchill, Mary McCarthy, Ber Gammell, Michelle Gammell, Edmond O’Reilly, Sam Hand, Jerry Ryan, Jerry Herbert, John Crowley, Mike Sexton, John Carey, Ger Finn, Shane O’Brien, Daithi Creedon and Simon Kelly. Even though it was still quite bright, lights were blazing as we headed for Bruree. We turned left in Bruree, on to Charleville, left for Kilmallock and back to the car park. At this stage a few club members were keen to clock up a some more k’s and headed to Ardpatrick, the top of Glennanar, about face and home. It was a taste of what we can look forward to when the evenings get brighter.

Sunday morning’s cycle was split into two routes. Route one went to Kilfinane, Ballintubber, Ballylanders, Knocklong and home, while route two headed to Glennanar, Ballyorgan, Kilfinane and then followed the remainder of route one back to Kilmallock. Bright Lights!!

Wednesday Night Light Cycle at 6.30pm was enlightening this week as cyclists blazed off in day light for the night cycle. It is great to welcome the stretch in the evenings and it won’t be long ’till we put away our high powered lights for another summer of cycling. The Quarry Hill circuit was uncyclable this week due to trucks unloading topsoil in to the Quarry, the road was covered in soil and stones so we decided to cycle off in to the country roads for a refreshing change to the circuit of Kilmallock. As the cycle progressed from Bruff to Athlacca the full moon started to shine bright in the evening sky and our SWW club cyclists were mad for road. The moon may have had an effect or cyclists may just be happy to have 40minutes of sunlight. Out enjoying the mid week cycle and the smiling face of the moon were Mary McCarthy, Michelle Gammell, Ber Gammell, Sean Burchill, Mathew Gammell, Tadhg Murphy, Jerry Ryan, Paul Gammell, Mike Sexton , John Carey, Michael Gammell, Brendan Houlihan and Edmond O’Reilly. Well done night riders, the Hoff would be proud!!

What a week of cycling. Wheely Well done.

Southside Wheely Wheelers Cycling Club.

Brilliant, Astounding, Massive are only three words to describe the Southside Wheely Wheelers Wednesday Night Light Cycle and yet again was another wheely wonderful  successful evening of night light cycling. So many of our leisure club cyclists turn up every Wednesday at 6.30pm to train with dedication to prepare for upcoming leisure tours for example the Ring of Kerry.  It is exhilarating for club cyclists to get out cycling midweek and enjoy cycling in unusually warm weather making cycling so enjoyable and wheely great fun. Lights for our bicycles were powered up during the week in preparation for our weekly night light cycle, Hi-viz vests were washed by our good wives and not forgetting husbands in readiness for our club spin. Well done to our club night riders who leaped on their bikes on Wednesday February 29.   Out cycling on this leap year day were David Walsh, Aaron Walsh, Ger Finn, Mike Sexton, John Carey, Jerry Herbert, Jerry Ryan, Willie McCarthy, Adrian Gammell, Mathew Gammell, Paul Gammell, Ber Gammell, Michelle Gammell, and Mary McCarthy. Well done all.

Southside Wheely Wheelers club cyclists took part in the Sophie Mulcahy Mini Tour of Munster 380kms.  Our club cyclists cycle in hundreds of charity cycles raising thousands of euro for worthy causes and this cycle is for one of Kilmallock’s native sons Liam Mulcahy who’s daughter Sophie needs our support  to enable Sophie to travel to the UK and the US for treatment. Sophie is a brave little girl who suffers with a rare condition called Ohdo Syndrome. Our thoughts and prayers are with Liam, Stacey and Sophie Mulcahy and wish them good health and happiness for the future. We would like to thank our club cyclists who cycled three days and raised funding for Sophie. Many thanks to Timmy Hanley, Jerry Ryan, Sean Burchill, Donal “Dodo” Kelly, Willie McCarthy, Owen Tobin, Stephen Finn and Shane O’Brien. A great cycling achievement for a brave little girl, Sophie. Wheely Wheely well done.

Saturday Training Cycle at 9.30am Saturday March  3 Saturday training continued and was brought to you by the letter W, wheely wet and windy. With so much cycling going on over the weekend it was great to have our club members continue cycling on Saturday morning and is a great opportunity for new members to start cycling in a friendly steady group. Well done to Robert Shanahan, Jonathan Moloney, Liam Duggan and Jerry Ryan for turning up on Saturday.

Underage cycling Saturday March 3 continued at 3pm to 4pm and our young club cyclists continued to learn the art and skills of cycling. Great credit has to be given to our young SWW cyclist’s boys and girls who turn up every week and enjoy learning the skills of cycling. Well done to Michael Gammell Jnr., Kate Passmore, Aaron Passmore, Aisling Murphy, Jamie Harte, Anna Walsh, Aaron Shanahan, Edmund O Connor, and Sarah Herbert who enjoyed this week’s training.

Sunday March 4 cyclists met for the weekly Sunday spin at 8.30am at the car part next to Kilmallock Cycles. Weather was dry and bright as cyclists prepared their bicycles for the kilometres ahead and enjoyed conversations on the snow that fell earlier in the morning and how the training was progressing for the leisure tours ahead in the coming weeks and months of 2012. Cyclists warmed up after a few kilometres as the morning was cold but we were drenched in beautiful sunshine as cyclists completed 100kms and 80kms in two groups on flat roads avoiding the hills in case of icy roads. Out enjoying the Sunday spin were Paul Finn, Ger Finn, Matt McKeogh, Mathew Gammell, Mike Sexton, Pat O’Donnell, John Carey, Michael Gammell, Simon Kelly, Michael Meade, Paul Gammell and Jerry Herbert. Well done lads. Great spin. Weekly Training: Saturday at 9.30am. Sunday at 8.30am and Wednesday at 6.30pm all meet at the car park next to Kilmallock Cycles.
